Fredericton CUPE members are organizing a wide range of activities in hospitals across the province in honour of Unsung Heroes Day. More than 6,000 Unsung Heroes work in hospitals across New Brunswick, according to Canada’s largest union. They provide clean laundry, nutritious diets, sterile operating rooms and other essential medical services.
“Their work is often invisible, yet without them, New Brunswick’s hospitals would cease function. Their wages are the lowest, by far, in the hospital sector”, says David Rouse, president of CUPE New Brunswick.
The Unsung Heroes do a wide range of jobs from Registered Nursing Assistant, to Laundry Worker, to Maintenance Worker, to Emergency Medical Technician and much more.
“Our members have not forgotten how they have been treated by Premier Lord,” says Rouse. “Today, our Unsung Heroes call on all the people of New Brunswick to send a resounding message to the Lord government. During the next election, let’s work together to defeat the Tories.”
There are many activities being planned for Unsung Heroes Day. “Some hospitals are using mascots, others are offering cake and cookies, and some are setting up contests”, says Rouse. “We want the public to know about the work we do and show them that we are active members of our community”
