Orillia - Across Ontario, public power supporters are aware of Orillia’s own Maurice MacMillan and his personal fight to stop deregulation and privatization of electricity.

This Saturday, February 15 at 7 p.m., at the Highwayman Inn (Coldwater and Westmount) MacMillan will be celebrated for his activism, “that has resulted in personal hardship for him,” says Paul Kahnert, a spokesperson with the Ontario Electricity Coalition (OEC), a province-wide pro-public power group, hosting the event.

For more than a year, the OEC has travelled the province talking to Ontarians in town halls, and church basements to explain the dangers of selling off our public hydro system. The Saturday event in Owen Sound will be a combination public meeting and social community event.

“We are asking the community to ’stand up for the man who stood up for you’ by signing petitions to reinstate Maurice back to his regular job and to restore and renew public power, says Kahnert.

Since the Tory government flip-flop on hydro, the OEC has cautioned Ontarians to be wary of “price caps and rebates. Because these are not solutions to the mess the Tories have made of hydro reform. Renewing public power is the only solution,” says Kahnert.
