Introduction to Stewarding

What does a CUPE steward do? If you are a new steward and want to learn how to help CUPE members solve workplace problems, this introductory workshop is for you! In this workshop, you will learn: • investigating workplace problems; • filing a grievance; • meeting with management; • dealing with workplace complaints. NOTE: Please bring a copy of your collective agreement to the workshop.

LET - Duty of Fair Representation

Learn about your local's duty to represent the members in your union, the legal requirements of fair representation and how it applies to your collective agreement and other laws covering your workplace.

Nov 19, 2025 (9:00am-12:00pm (Eastern))Explore what ableism is, how to recognize it, and ways to address it. Learn about how to make your workplace and union accessible to workers with visible and invisible disabilities.
Duty to Accommodate

Learn about the rights and responsibilities of both employers and unions under the Duty to Accommodate. In this workshop you will: • explore case law, key concepts and the prohibited grounds of discrimination under human rights law; • learn to make the case for accommodating workers and how to help union representatives and employers come up with appropriate accommodations for members; • Look at how we can break down stereotypes and stigma to support the accommodation process for those who need it. Participants should bring a copy of their collective agreement.

The fee for this course is $80 for affiliated and $90 for non-affiliated and $100 for out of district to hold your your spot. Please make the cheque payable to Sault Ste Marie District CUPE Council 606-421 Bay Street, Station Tower, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 1X3. Cheque must be received 2 weeks prior to the course, not later than October 31, 2025. Fees covers morning and afternoon snacks.
