Relations between the City of Longueuil and their inside workers have reached a new low.  Last night, members voted 92% in favour of pressure tactics up to and including strike action.

The inside workers, particularly technicians, professionals and school crossing guards, have been without a contract since January 1, 2021.

The main stumbling block in negotiations is work schedules. SREM-CUPE 306, the amalgamated union of municipal employees, which represents these workers, deplores, among other things, that the City of Longueuil is not offering inside workers, most of whom are women, the same work-life balance arrangement as they did to its outside workers.

The union created a website where union members can write to the mayor, Catherine Fournier, and other elected officials on city council to call them out on this inequity. A humorous letter patterned on letters normally sent to Santa Claus was sent to mayor Fournier reminding her of the principles of justice she so often cited during the speeches she delivered in the past.
