CUPE locals aren’t tapping the full potential of young members, and that needs to change. A new guide, entitled Engaging Young Workers, gives practical tips for local leaders on how to engage and empower young CUPE members, and build a stronger union.

Developed by CUPE’s National Young Worker Committee, the guide identifies internal and external barriers to young workers’ participation in their union, as well as ways to foster greater inclusion and involvement.

The committee surveyed young CUPE members in 2022. The results reveal only 25% of respondents believe their local is promoting youth engagement in their union.

When nearly one in five CUPE members are under 34, it’s clear we can and must do better to engage, empower, and mobilize the next generation of activists in our union.
