CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador is encouraged to learn that the province has listened to feedback from the public and will temporarily suspend library closures until a review is completed.
“Today’s announcement is a positive step forward,” says CUPE NL Representative Dawn Learning. “Now that the province has committed to this review, we want to stress the importance of inviting members of the community to participate in the process, as well as library patrons and library workers.”
President of CUPE 2329, Dawn Lahey says, “Libraries are essential to our communities. They are community hubs used as education centres, meeting places for local groups and more. We hope all the members of these communities will be represented in the review.”
CUPE 2329 represents 250 employees at the Provincial Information and Library Resources Board in 95 communities.
“CUPE members have worked tirelessly to defend these libraries. I want to thank everyone,” says CUPE NL President Wayne Lucas. “You stood your ground and made yourselves heard. Well done!”
