After more than two years without a collective agreement and with negotiations deemed to be at a standstill, Bois-des-Filion firefighters, who are members of CUPE 7139, have decided to resort to pressure tactics to protest the town’s inaction to date.
“While the town is investing thousands of dollars in flowers, it refuses to recognize the essential work done by firefighters. We save lives, not petunias!” exclaimed Dominic Tessier, president of CUPE 7139.
The pressure tactics, which received unanimous support at a general meeting vote last October 16, are intended to raise public awareness and mobilize their support. The tactics include putting up posters, distributing informative tracts and having discussions with citizens. “To ensure the safety of both the citizens and our teams, we can’t wait any longer. The time has come for the town to shoulder its responsibilities and take quick action,” said Tessier.
The firefighters are seeking permanent positions, wage catch-up to close the gap of nearly 40% separating them from their counterparts in comparable fire departments, and equitable working conditions.
