This morning, the Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT) issued CUPE union certification to the Gatineau white-collar workers’ union. In early October following a union membership card signature blitz, CUPE filed an application for certification for that union, which had been independent for 30 years.

“It is good news for all white-collar employees with the City of Gatineau. Most of the white-collar workers chose to join CUPE, a choice that was confirmed by the TAT. In addition, we were forced to wait until the municipal election this past Sunday was over before we could complete negotiations. Starting next week, we will be working alongside the best union in the municipal sector to wrap up our talks,” said union president, Marc Demers.

The 1000 white-collar workers had been without a contract for close to three years. In the summer, 90.5% of the membership voted for a strike mandate.

“Let it be known that we’ll do everything we can to provide you with the necessary expertise so that you can complete your negotiations and build a strong local union. On behalf of the CUPE family, welcome aboard,” said Marc Ranger, CUPE’s regional director in Quebec.
