CUPE released a policy statement on mandatory retirement this week, in response to Ontario government initiatives to let people work after 65.

CUPE argues that mandatory retirement is the wrong issue. Most workers would prefer to retire earlier, not later. But if you don’t have a pension, you will have to keep working when you hit 65no matter what the law says.

CUPE wants real retirement choices for older workers to allow them to retire with dignity and security and to make room for younger workers. CUPE is also concerned that efforts to repeal mandatory retirement laws will make it harder for all workers to retire.
