Montra006c, Tuesday, August 13, 2002 - The content as well as the form of Vido0074ron’s latest “package deal”, far from bringing the parties together, actually risks igniting the current conflict that is fast becoming the disgrace of Qub0065c.

The union bargaining committee’s first reaction to what Vido0074ron qualifies as a package deal is that it is no more than a collection of new demands that do nothing but reveal the inordinate appetite of Qub0065cor and its managers in regard to its employees. The union representatives consider that the employer’s package submitted today (Tuesday) is worse than the one rejected by 99% of the members three months ago. It should be noted that it was at the employer’s request that the union representatives had agreed to this meeting to receive the new package.

During the afternoon, Vido0074ron initiated a veritable marketing operation to promote its “package” by contacting the media even before the union bargaining committee had left the room where the meeting was being held. In the Union’s opinion, this pseudo-negotiation operation and attempt to manipulate the media clearly shows that Vido0074ron does not want a settlement in the short term.

The two unions representing the 2,200 employees locked-out by Vido0074ron will present a more detailed reaction tomorrow (Wednesday).

With 7,000 members in communications in Qub0065c, CUPE is active in several other sectors including health and social services, education, universities, urban and air transport, government corporations and public organizations in Qub0065c, hydroelectricity and municipalities. With close to 100,000 members, CUPE is the largest FTQ affiliate.
