TORONTO — The union representing almost 500 signal, electrical and communication workers, who keep Toronto’s transit system safe for passengers, will hold a strike vote tomorrow, Thursday, March 27.

We are ready to negotiate anytime,” said Mike Santos, president of CUPE Local 2. “We have done everything we can to move this process along, but we can’t negotiate with ourselves. We need management’s team at the table.”

The two sides have met once this month, but no progress was made on negotiating a new collective agreement. The union is still waiting for management to agree to meeting dates, even though their talks with the Amalgamated Transit Union have broken off and negotiators should be available, Santos said.

Ultimately, the system cannot operate without us,” he said. CUPE Local 2 members, who maintain subway signals and electrical and communication systems for the entire transit network, will meet Thursday evening to vote on giving their union a strike mandate before the April 1 deadline.
