A Toronto Star column co-authored by CUPE economist Toby Sanger makes the case for keeping city assets like Toronto Hydro public.

Sanger and Canadian Auto Workers economist Jim Stanford crunch the numbers behind the fire-sale frenzy that’s gripped candidates for Toronto mayor. The bottom line: “far from solving our current deficit woes, privatization will in fact make things worse.”

The two economists expose the short-sighted thinking behind privatization, and highlight the long-term financial and community benefits of keeping city services and operations public.

Stanford was a member of Mayor David Miller’s Independent Fiscal Review Panel. He wrote about the experience for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Monitor and the Progressive Economics Forum blog.
