SUDBURY Representatives from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local One, which represents Toronto Hydro employees, and the Ontario Electricity Coalition (OEC) will be visiting Sudbury Hydro picket lines:

  • when?
    Today, July 23rd
    12:00 noon

  • where?
    Sudbury Hydro headquarters.

CUPE Local One and the Ontario Electricity Coalition have voiced their opposition to Sudbury Hydros demands for contract concessions.

Hydro workers across the province will stand together against any push for take-aways, says Bruno Silano, the president of CUPE Local One. We are traveling to Sudbury to deliver a message to Sudbury Hydro workers that they have our support and to the employer, that we will help our neighbours in this struggle.

Paul Kahnert, Ontario Electricity Coalition spokesperson, says demands for concessions are only one part of wider problems with Ontarios electricity sector. Many, many Ontario residents are very concerned that our public electricity system, the best in the world, is being eroded, says Kahnert. They recognize that these attacks on workers are part of a larger picture. Thats the reason we support the stand these workers are taking.

Silano will be presenting a $2,500 cheque to Local 4705 president Wyman MacKinnon on the picket line in support of the strike.

The OEC is a coalition of environmental groups, seniors, the Council of Canadians, labour, social justice groups, and concerned citizens.
