CUPE 3372 on strike for fair wagesFeb 4, 2009 10:59 AM
FREDERICTON - The members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3372, walked off the job this morning at 10:00 am.
The six members of CUPE 3372 are cafeteria workers at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre in Fredericton.
"Every day, these workers feed hundreds of students and workers but can barely afford to put food on the table to feed their family. They are among the lowest paid food service workers in the province", explained Maureen Michaud, CUPE Representative.
"We have been in negotiation with Aramark, a multi-national company based in Philadelphia, for the last year but the company refuses to budge on the wage issues."
Two weeks ago, the members of the local unanimously voted in favour of a strike action to support their demand.
Members of CUPE Local 3372 prepare and serve food for the students at the Maritime College of Forestry Technology and for the provincial and Federal government employees. They also cater to special functions such as banquets and business meetings.
This group has been without a contract since December 31, 2007.
