Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) councillor Wes Stubbert was shooting from the hip in mid-October about contracting out garbage collection just as CUPE was entering contract negotiations with the CBRM.

Garbage collection is privatized throughout the CBRM except in Sydney, Glace Bay and Dominion where CUPE members perform the public service.

We’re here to deliver services to the public, the taxpayer, at the lowest possible cost, and we can’t do that with Sydney and Glace Bay because of the staggering costs of doing it with our own forces,” said Stubbert in the Cape Breton Post.

Again, Winnipeg could provide a reality check for Stubbert and other councillors entertaining the idea of privatized collection in the CBRM. The front end of the deal always looks great but the back end can harm the taxpayers that Stubbert so passionately cares about.
