CUPE Nova Scotia is standing in solidarity with our Sisters and Brothers from our aboriginal communities as they launch #IdleNoMore protests across the country.

Aboriginal Canadians are demanding nothing more than to have a government that is willing to consult and listen and act on behalf of people and not corporate greed.

Increasingly we find many communities in our land and its peoples who are facing inequality and injustices at the hands of the Harper Government. The omnibus bill, C-45, is an attack on our democratic processes and is a way for our federal government to short-circuit parliamentary discussion on matters of major legislative change in our country.

Bill C-45 undermines the protection of nature by making substantial changes to laws that were once used to create a sustainable environment, clean water and healthy oceans for all Canadians. Our federal government’s lack of meaningful consultation and forceful legislation is becoming the normal practice on many fronts.

We need a federal government that is willing to work with First Nations and other Canadians to find the best path towards building strong communities.
