TORONTO – Earlier today, City of Toronto staff released their report on the benefits and drawbacks of contracting out solid waste management east of Yonge Street. This report was further supported by an independent analysis from accounting firm Ernst and Young.

We are very pleased to see that both the staff and Ernst and Young reports affirm that the current model in which the city directly operates half of the solid waste management delivers high value and quality of service for residents of Toronto.

While we strongly believe that public services like solid waste collection are best delivered directly by municipalities, the mixed model currently in effect in Toronto is an effective one which makes sense for residents.

We welcome the city’s analysis and its conclusion there is an important role for public services in solid waste residential collection.
