(Halifax) A strike has been narrowly averted at St. Josephs Early Childhood Centres in Halifax, after employees voted to accept a new 2 year deal.

The 45 teachers and cooks, members of CUPE Local 3845, voted last night to accept the deal which was retroactive to January 2003 and runs through to December 2004.

It contains several improvements, including:

  • Wages increases ranging between 4.5% and 5.7%
  • A new format for wage scales
  • Overtime after 35 hours instead of 40, a major improvement
  • An establishment of joint committee to look at the issue of overtime in each of the work locations.
