SUDBURY Sid Ryan, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario Division, will lead a solidarity rally for Greater Sudbury Hydro strikers at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13 in Tom Davies Square, prior to the city council meeting.

This council says it wont hear a deputation from us because it doesnt get involved in labour disputes, Ryan says. I call it being involved when you own the utility, appoint the board, and have councillors sitting on that board. Council is going to hear us.

The members of CUPE 4705 have been on strike since June 19. The union is fighting employer demands for concessions, including the elimination of benefits for retired workers and weakened protection against contracting out and technological change.

CUPE represents 200,000 public sector workers in Ontario municipalities, school boards, universities and health and social services.
