After only five days on strike, an agreement in principle has been reached between municipal workers in Saint-Basile-le-Grand and the city’s administration. Some 40 members of CUPE Local 1691 returned to work August 6.

“We obtained what we wanted, particularly in regard to wages,” said CUPE representative Serge Pilote. Regular, casual and temporary employees obtained salary increases of 6 per cent for 2002 and 2003. For the same period, the wages of students who work for the municipality will increase by 25 per cent. In addition, premiums for all unionized employees have been revised upward.

The contentious issue of work organization has been sent to arbitration with a resolution expected by August 31, 2002.
