The 50 workers at the incinerator in Qub0065c City, employees of TIRU (Canada) Inc., have ended their strike, having won major pension improvements.

The members of CUPE Local 1754 had been on strike since February 1 but essential services legislation kept them on the job.

The key issue in dispute was the future of the pension plan. The employer has agreed that all pension surpluses must be used for the sole benefit of the workers and that it cannot take a pension holiday.

Local president Alain Lv0065sque says “the improvements represent a major gain for our members.” He credits an effective strike strategy that put pressure on the employer by operating only two of the four furnaces used to burn household waste.
