WINDSOR, Ont. – On Thursday, June 26, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, members from local 4299 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in the Windsor-Essex region will get support from other unions in a rally to denounce age discrimination that school board workers are facing at the Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques du Sud-Ouest.

As they reach the age of 65, workers in this school board lose most of the benefits that are offered to their colleagues.

For Anthony Cutrone, president of CUPE local 4299, discrimination based on age must be denounced: “The situation has occurred recently, explains Cutrone, where two members have lost their benefits coverage even if they each had around 15 years of seniority. They are facing a tough financial situation, as they must now assume some major health care and drug costs.”

At a membership meeting last May, local 4299 members strongly expressed their indignation and planned a common action with the support of other local unions. The June 26 rally will hopefully raise awareness to age discrimination that takes place within this school board.

CUPE represents around 300 support staff members within local 4299, working as custodians, education assistants, office and clerical staff, and para-professionals at the Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques du Sud-Ouest.
