      <title>Tell Flaherty: Improved CPP is the best option</title>
      <link>http://cupe.ca/action.php?submit=show&amp;actionID=230</link>
      <description>

	Finance Minister Jim Flaherty appears to be backtracking on his support for an expanded Canada Pension Plan (CPP) - even though most provinces support CPP improvements.

	Instead of making higher CPP benefits the top priority, Flaherty wants to create a pooled private RRSP system which is bad for Canadians&amp;mdash;but good for Canadian banks and mutual fund companies.

	We need your help. Canadians don&#39;t need the banks and financial industry getting another opportunity to gouge them out of their hard earned savings. We need leadership from our governments. Help keep the pressure up on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

      <description>

	Trade talks between Canada and the European union are being held in Ottawa on October 17 &amp;ndash; 21. This could be the last round of negotiations of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, known as CETA. We need to take action now to stop this deal.

	Email Prime Minister Stephen Harper and ask him to immediately halt negotiations on this deal.

	Then, watch our video, share it with your friends, and find out what else you can do.

      <title>Release all political prisoners in Burma!</title>
      <link>http://cupe.ca/action.php?submit=show&amp;actionID=260</link>
      <description>

	According to Amnesty International and Assistance Association Political Prisoners (Burma):

		Even though 200 political prisoners were released October 12, 90 per cent of political prisoners remain behind bars.

		Nearly 2,000 political prisoners, including monks, students and labour activists still remain in various prisons.

		Prison conditions are deplorable; 146 prisoners have died since 1988 due to disease, malnutrition and maltreatment by prison authorities

	Please add your voice to the campaign sponsored by CUPE, Canadian Friends of Burma and CUSO-VSO, and send a short message to U Thein Sein, President of Union of Burma (Myanmar).

      <title>Send a message to Environment Minister Kent: Take Action on Climate Change</title>
      <link>http://cupe.ca/action.php?submit=show&amp;actionID=266</link>
      <description>

	CUPE members can make their voices heard at the international climate change negotiations that are underway in South Africa. You can write to our federal government to demand that it act on behalf of all Canadians and world citizens to push toward a treaty that will help slow climate change.

	Canada under Harper is not doing nearly enough on the world stage and at home to cut greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. Canadian emissions continue to go up as Harper favours old technologies over progressing to a clean, green and healthier society and economy.

	Climate change effects are with us now. Our weather has turned weird quickly, with severe storms, droughts, heat waves and floods. In the developing world, the impacts are far more severe.

	Write to federal Environment Minister Peter Kent and tell him to negotiate a climate agreement that reflects the interests of all Canadians who want action on climate change to make the world more equitable and environmentally stable and secure.

      <title>Help McMaster University&#8217;s Post-Doctoral Fellows Secure a Fair Deal</title>
      <link>http://cupe.ca/action.php?submit=show&amp;actionID=267</link>
      <description>

	CUPE 3906 represents 130 Post-doctoral fellows (PDFs) who work hard to enhance the reputation of McMaster University. Mac&amp;rsquo;s PDFs have been trying to secure a fair contract with management since their last contract expired in August of last year.

	We return to the bargaining table later this month to secure a deal for our members so we can all continue to provide the important academic services that make our university work.

	A fair deal that includes a fair and competitive compensation package can be reached with McMaster if the administration moves away from their current inflexible position of no increases in the final years of their proposed contract terms.

	The monetary difference between the administration&amp;rsquo;s position and what the union has offered, to reach a deal, is minimal compared to the potential operations disruption at the university in the event of a management/labour dispute.

	Please help us secure a fair deal with McMaster University by taking a moment to send management an e-mail in support of our quest for a fair deal.
