Ituna: Striking group home workers at Deer Park Villa in Ituna are holding a rally and shelter-warming party on Tuesday, December 21, to mark the first day of winter and the 202nd day of their strike.

The rally will be held from 12 noon 2 p.m. in Ituna (one block west of the main street). Speeches will begin at 12:15 p.m.

The 27 group home workers nearly all women walked off the job on June 3 to secure meaningful seniority language and a first contract.

Deer Park Villa, a community-based organization, receives funding from the provincial government to operate three group homes and an activity centre for adults with mental and physical challenges.

Since the strike began, only one group home has been operating; most of the residents have been sent to other facilities and communities.

Local residents, family members and other supporters are invited to join the strikers on the picket line and participate in the shelter-warming party.

The shelter a converted bus will be officially opened at the noon-hour rally on Tuesday.
