“The vice president said that the weather is warm for closing the detox centre - so we are holding a protest rally,” says Michael Walters, President of CUPE Local 4800.

Hamilton City Hall (Main and Bay Streets)

Last week, Hamilton Health Sciences abruptly announced the closing of the Hamilton Mens Detox Centre for a period of three months. All the workers received layoff notices on the basis of insufficient qualifications - despite the fact that at least a third of the workers had the paper qualifications and the rest had equivalency status. There had been no consultation with anyone who worked at or used the centre.

Now that word of the closing has spread, a protest movement is growing - city workers and community members are angry that this action shows a callous disregard for some of Hamiltons neediest citizens.
