The Charest governments announcement of $150 million in cuts to social assistance this week angered municipal welfare workers.

Were dealing with an irresponsible government here, said CUPE 429 president Daniel Papillon Demers, whose members work for the City of Montréal.

Demers said the welfare cuts would go toward financing tax breaks for wealthy Quebecers and add injury to the insult of having to support their clients with more than 100 fewer staff as a result of government cuts.
