Employees of the Region of Peel Public Works, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 966, filed for a “no board’ with the Ministry of Labour on Friday, May 18, putting them in a legal strike or lockout position in the first week of June.
“The members felt strongly that they could not accept the concessions the Region has on the table,” said Mary Jo Falle, president of CUPE Local 966. “The concessions they are facing are even more severe than the concessions our Ontario Works employees rejected and have been on strike since May 3 to protest.”
Public Works employees oversee the safety of water and the safe disposal of waste water in the Region.
“The Public Works employees stand in solidarity with their Ontario Works brother and sisters. We are only seeking equality with other workers in the area and with management and non-union employees,” said Michel Revelin, vice-president of CUPE Local 966.
