SASKATOON—CUPE BC’s flagship publication picked up two prizes for excellence in graphics at this year’s Canadian Association of Labour Media (CALM) awards.

Public Employee won the award for excellence in layout and design for publications produced by staff, as well as best illustration for publications produced by staff. The illustration, “Deal Us Out,” was the cover art for a Winter 2008 feature on the Trade, Investment, and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA). It was done by Sam Shoicet in conjunction with Working Design.

Working Design has produced the layout and overall design of Public Employee since Spring 2002.

Also at the CALM awards this year, CUPE’s health services division in B.C., the Hospital Employees’ Union, won three awards for its “Living Wage” campaign (best public advocacy audio-visual production, best moving billboard, and breaking barriers), one for best cartoon produced by staff, and the muckraking prize for its “Just Shut Up, B.C.” campaign against Bill 42, the BC Liberal gag law.

The annual CALM Awards recognize excellence in union publications and productions. Entries are judged by independent experts in a variety of categories and classes. The 2008 CALM Awards were presented at the 2009 CALM conference in Saskatoon on May 22.
