Picket lines will be going up at 8:00 am at Summer Street Industries in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia today because the Department of Community Services has failed to provide funding on provincial issues.

CUPE National Representative Wayne Thomas says, “Both sides worked very hard through the night and came up with an agreement on every outstanding issue except for those that are funded by the Department of Community Services (DCS).

It is very unfortunate that these workers will be on a picket line this morning because DCS has failed to come forward with some very modest funding for 22 employees,” says Thomas.

Says Thomas, “And because Summer Street was reasonable in resolving the outstanding issues that were within their power, the union has agreed – at least for the time being – not to picket events that have already been scheduled such as weddings and meetings at the facility.”

Summer Street is a sheltered workshop for adults with intellectual disabilities.
