A brief lunch hour rally today, involving more than 500 health care workers and their supporters, marched through Vancouver General Hospital’s cafeteria and administration area to protest the privatization of laundry, housekeeping and security services.

The impressive turnout of HEU workers was bolstered by members of the BC Nurses Union, the Health Sciences Association, other unions, and several community groups who are demanding an immediate halt to the contracting out of critical hospital support services.

The rally sets the stage for what is expected to be a high-profile, massive public demonstration next Wednesday, January 15 when health care workers will march from the hospital to the Vancouver Coastal health Authority’s corporate offices.

The anti-privatization protest will convene at Willow Park on 12th avenue (across from VGH) at 3:15 pm and march to the corner of 6th and Cambie where the rally will deliver “Keep housekeeping in house” petitions to the Authority.
