Ottawa – Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil is sending absolutely the wrong signal to working people in his province with a decision to remove CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh from the Council of Atlantic Premiers’ Panel on Impacts of EI Changes.
“The president of CUPE Nova Scotia was the only labour representative to be named to that panel, and was put there by Nova Scotia specifically to provide an important labour perspective on the federal government’s cuts to EI,” said CUPE National President Paul Moist.
“We have now learned that Premier McNeil plans to remove labour’s voice from this important panel. What does that to say to the one-third of the Nova Scotia workforce that is represented by unions?” asked Moist.
The panel was struck in June of this year by the Atlantic Premiers and was a result of their meeting in White Point, Nova Scotia, in April.
Cavanagh was informed of the premier’s decision through the Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental affairs.
