The 335 members of CUPE local 227 and 1431 who work at Halifax Water (HRWC) have been on strike for over a month now. HRWC’s Board is comprised of four municipal council members, including Mayor Savage, who want to cut the workers’ pensions.

This pension cut would see plan members lose upwards of 30% of their pension. Striking CUPE members are concerned about how they are being treated.  As a ratepayer and a taxpayer, you should also be concerned with board-approved overspending, huge salaries for managers and too many managers.  In fact, in 2013 the municipal Auditor General cited concerns about the top-heavy management at HRWC – with an estimated one manager for every three workers. What is the cost of that?

It’s time for accountability in the wake of successive water rate hikes.
