TORONTO – The Facilities Service and Maintenance Department of the Peel District School Board have voted 94 percent in favour of a strike.

“Our workers saved the employer over two million dollars last year,” said Tony Pereira, President of CUPE Local 2544 which represents the custodian maintenance workers at the Peel District School Board. “Instead of thanking us, they want to cut our benefits.”

Local 2544 represents the only department of the Peel District School Board that came in under budget. The budget, based on cost per square foot, was $72.7 million dollars last year, but the Peel Board only needed to spend $70.5 million.

“We worked very hard to help the Peel Board be as productive it is,” said Pereira. “They should be thanking us, not trying to cut our benefits.”
