Supervisors at Northwood Home Care join CUPEAug 25, 2006 09:36 AM
(Halifax) – Supervisors at the largest home care care centre in Eastern Canada are now members of the country’s largest union.
The supervisors at Northwood Home Care in Halifax elected their new executive last night. The president of Local 4769 is Dorothy Adams.
CUPE National Representative John Evans says, “CUPE has written the administrator today and served notice to commence bargaining for a first contract.”
Says Evans, “The newest members of CUPE had to jump through some legal hoops to get unionized, but that didn’t deter them. They had a hearing at the Labour Relations Board where the employer contested their application for unionization. In the end, the workers were victorious.”
Meanwhile, CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says, “We are very pleased to have this small but mighty group in CUPE. These supervisors work with home support workers, and CUPE has several locals in this sector so we were a natural fit for them.
“We look forward to helping them improve their wages, benefits and working conditions,” says Cavanagh.
