CUPE Nova Scotia is urging provincial Health Minister Dave Wilson to take a stand on the Harper government’s latest attack on our public healthcare system.
CUPE NS President Danny Cavanagh says, “The Conservative government has informed the independent Health Council of Canada that its funding will be discontinued next year, the same time the provincial health accords are set to expire.”
“This move is a clear indication to us that Stephen Harper is ignoring his responsibility to ensure Canadians are receiving the best possible healthcare and is prepared to silence any agency or organization that is critical of his role.”
Says Cavanagh, “Our provincial government should be taking a strong stand against ending the funding to an agency that all provincial governments have benefitted from having.”
The Health Council has reported annually to Canadians about the quality, effectiveness and sustainability of the health care system since its formation in 2004. It came out of the Romanow Commisssion.
Says Cavanagh, “Nova Scotians should also be expressing their disappointment with the four Conservative MPs from our province who are supporting the dissolution and silencing of this agency.”
