A CUPE 281 member died Oct. 26, 2006 at his job as a city worker in Westville, NS.

Mike Bonvie was working in a trench when it collapsed, killing him and injuring another worker.

His coworkers dug frantically to get him out, but he was pronounced dead at hospital.

The provincial labour department has shut the site down while it investigates the cause of the collapse.

“My heart goes out to Mike’s family, friends and co-workers,” said CUPE National President Paul Moist. “This is a horrible thing to have happen and our union grieves over this loss.”

Mike Bonvie leaves a wife and two daughters.

Funeral services were held in New Glasgow, Sunday, Oct. 29
