Petition body
I am writing to express my concern about Prairie South School Division’s decision to lay off 26 school assistants. This decision is about Prairie South’s financial situation, but it is the students who are going to end up paying the price. School assistants play a vital role in providing recess and lunch time supervision and student support. In addition, they provide support for teaching staff, assist in the office and the library by providing a wide range of tasks, including sorting and circulating library books, maintaining bulletin boards, organizing educational aids, photocopying, laminating, organizing and delivering materials within the school, and minor cleaning. Without school assistants, frontline workers like educational assistants and teaching staff will have less time for direct student care. Furthermore, this decision may result in unexpected costs as school assistants are the lowest paid employees in the school. How will the division save money if it has to pay other classifications more to do the same work? I ask that the school board reconsider its decision. Further, I ask that the provincial government properly fund the education sector so that frontline staffing levels remain the same.
