The recording secretary’s job is vital in promoting the unions goals of militancy and solidarity. Generally speaking the recording secretary is responsible for record keeping, and written communications.

It is the job of the recording secretary to keep the members informed about the problems facing them and the activities that the local is undertaking to deal with these problems. Keeping the members informed and involved is the key to building interest and involvement of members in union activities.

Keeping and maintaining records of decisions taken by the local and information such as letters to and from the employer and with other organizations are vital to the smooth and efficient running of the union.
