A new study by economist Hugh Mackenzie will quantify the shortfall in Ontario’s school funding formula for Educational Assistants (EAs) who serve Ontario’s special needs children.

The study is a detailed examination of funding for Educational Assistants under Ontario’s education funding formula conducted for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario.

It also examines the real outcome of the funds announced by the Ontario government in August 2007, by which the government claimed to raise salary benchmarks of EAs by 22 per cent.

At this media conference:

Date:  Tuesday, October 2, 2007
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Location: Enoch Turner Schoolhouse
106 Trinity St. (at King St.)

Speakers will include Hugh Mackenzie of Hugh Mackenzie and Associates, CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer Fred Hahn, and an Educational Assistant.

Data will include figures on:

· Funding shortfalls for Educational Assistants for the 2006-2007 year, plus historical data,
· Number of EAs the funding formula indicates there should be in Ontario versus the actual EAs in schools,
· What the government needed to invest in August 2007 to meet its claim to improve salary benchmarks for EAs.
