Regional Vice-President, Northern Ontario

Born in North Bay raised in the small town of Corbeil with my 14 brothers and sisters and having five children of my own. Currently residing in Powassan. I have been an activist since 1979. Working for minimum wage fairness for Ontario working families. I’ve been the president of my Local Union for 26 years, at Cassellholme Home for the Aged where I am employed as a full-time cook. In the past was Co-chair of the North Bay Health Coalition and a Provincial NDP candidate. I have also been President of North Bay CUPE Council for the past ten years and President of the North Bay and District Labour Council for the past three years. It was May 2009 when I became a member at Large for Ontario Division. Shortly after becoming a board member I became Liaison with the International Solidarity Committee.

I have had the opportunity to organize and or participate in many campaigns supporting health care, anti-privatization, NDP Federal Election and Banning Bottled water. In my community we’ve been met with many of these challenges Launching the “Rock-a-Thon”. A 12hr rocking chair to raise awarness for a min. care standard of 3.5hrs. Also assisting in preparation of a potential lockout or strike with the Children Aid Society which was resolved without incident or concessions.

Annually we host a free Labour Day Picnic which drew more than 4,000 participants this year. Giving away free food, rides, activities and toys. Recently I was elected as the Northern Regional Vice President for the CUPE National Executive Board.

I look forward to serving my many sisters and brothers. I believe the battles and challenges may never stop but with the compassion and support of each other the gaps continue to minimize. We must continue to provided pressure to our governments and employers to maintain our rights and equality. Solidarity is power and power is people…

In Solidarity,

Henri Giroux
