European Day of Action and Solidarity

On this day of action and solidarity called for by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), we express solidarity with our sisters and brothers, and all workers in Europe. We draw inspiration from the hundreds of thousands of workers who have chosen to participate in the general strike taking place across Europe.

Working people around the world are coping with the impact of austerity measures in the wake of the global economic crisis. Cuts to the public sector, job layoffs, labour reform, deregulation and privatization are meant to serve the interests of the corporate elite and do nothing to rebuild a strong economy for the majority.

Austerity measures in Europe are fueling an economic depression, causing the economy to shrink, wages to fall and unemployment to rise, particularly amongst the youth. They are at the root of the mass mobilizations across Europe which is generating support for alternatives. The Social Compact is one of the alternatives which valuessocial rights over the unbridled profit margins of the free market.

As all levels of government in Canada impose austerity budgets it is clear the push back against austerity is a global struggle.
