Without a contract since December 2000, municipal workers in La Prairie, Quebec, walked off the job July 24.

The municipality has shown no interest in reaching a settlement, says CUPE Local 309 president Richard Moreau. The mayor, who was citys CAO during the last strike in 1984, seems more interested in finding points of confrontation than real solutions to the problems were encountering in the work place.

The 60 strikers, including both inside and outside workers, provide a wide range of services to local residents. The key points in the dispute include pensions, permanent status, wages and job evaluation.
