CUPE National President Paul Moist has written Prime Minister Stephen Harper to condemn the Canadian government’s failure to fully support democratic change in Egypt, and its tacit support for Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak.

It is unconscionable,” Moist writes, that Canada’s call for a ‘go-slow’ approach to change “could be so out of step with other democratic countries by continuing to support this dictatorial regime.”

Moist says Mubarak must go immediately, and those responsible for the violence against peaceful democracy protesters should be brought to justice.

CUPE wants Canada to be unequivocal in its demand that Mubarak resign immediately and firm in its support for a democratic transition “that allows the voices of all Egyptians to be heard.”
