CUPEs many successful campaigns fighting privatization and contracting out in the public sector were the focus for nearly 400 delegates who attended CUPE Ontarios Mobilizing 2000 Conference, held in Toronto in February.

The dynamic three-day conference incorporated a mix of inspirational speeches, exciting multi-media presentations and hands-on workshops.

Former NDP leader Stephen Lewis kicked off the conference. He encouraged CUPE members to continue to fight the myth that free-market economics and the privatization of our public services will mean prosperity for all. Other guest speakers included journalist Linda McQuaig and anti-globalization activist Tony Clarke, with the Polaris Institute.

Delegates were enthusiastic about the gathering, describing it as a positive and uplifting experience providing them with new mobilizing strategies in this new century.
