TORONTO, Ont. – The Ontario Legislature’s Standing Committee on Social Policy
will hear a strong message from frontline workers and parents on August 5 when they begin public hearings on Bill 77, an act to change developmental services in the province.
“We will be asking for amendments in order to mandate services for adults with a developmental disabilities and get rid of the waiting lists where thousands of Ontarians now linger,” said Sid Ryan, president of CUPE Ontario representing about 8,000 developmental services workers.
“Our sisters and brothers in OPSEU who also work in this sector and many parents we have talked to in recent weeks will be taking the same message to the hearings: don’t let this government re-create the mess we’ve seen in home care with competitive bidding, increased privatization and reduced service.”
Ryan will present CUPE’s deputation on Bill 77 at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5 in Committee Room 1 of the Ontario Legislative Building. Ryan, frontline workers and parents will be available for comment following the deputation.
