CUPE 3742, representing education workers in Prince George, B.C. has been working to stop Medcan, an Ontario-based health management company, from taking control of short-term sick leave benefits in the school district.

The local and the teachers association have forced the board to back off by taking their decision to contract out to Medcan before an arbitrator.

As well, theyve taken their fight to the community. In an op-ed piece sent to the local paper, local president Marilyn Hannah questions the papers endorsement of candidates for the school board who have supported the Medcan bid.

“The board is flaunting expensive privatization practices that end up doing nothing but costing more while delivering unequal services to our members,” says Hannah. “The Citizens thumbs up for this is appalling.”
