Edmonton Former BC Premier, Dave Barrett, now chair of the Tommy Douglas Research Institute will be joined by CUPE Alberta President Yvonne Fast and Anil Naidoo of the Council of Canadians to speak out on the future of Canadas health care system as the Alberta government prepares to unveil its controversial health care report.

The Alberta government has deliberately orchestrated this release to head-off public participation in a national debate on the reform of our health care system, said Barrett. It is no secret that the Klein government wants to set the stage for debate at the upcoming premiers conference. This is a deliberate pre-emptive strike against the process being undertaken by the Romanow commission, he added.

Now is the time for all Canadians to become involved. Provincial governments are not waiting for Romanow. Neither are we, said Barrett.

The Mazankowski report will be released at noon on Tuesday, January 8. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Council of Canadians and the Tommy Douglas Research Institute have been working together to encourage public participation in the reform of Canadas cherished Medicare system.
