More than 100 members of CUPE 379 launched a day of strike actions today with a study session at their maintenance yard. They will be joined by CUPE K-12 colleagues in Vancouver, New West, Richmond, Delta and Surrey.

All are activating their strike mandates, voted on after the breakdown of talks with local school boards. Talks at the provincial bargaining table broke down in April with virtually no progress made towards a new contract.

The strike actions are designed not to disrupt students and are the first step towards province-wide job action in the fall.

The 27,000 CUPE K-12 education workers in the province have been without a contract for more than a year and without a wage increase since 2009. Almost all of CUPE’s 57 K-12 locals have now passed strike votes and are activating their strike mandates.
