Alberta lost a statesman this week with the passing of Peter Lougheed.

Premier Lougheed was a political leader who believed in the power of communities, and in the ability of government and public services to make the lives of Albertans better.

And in an age where Conservative politicians often call for massive tax breaks and deals for the wealthiest and most powerful, Mr. Lougheed’s belief that Alberta should get the most from our oil and gas resources was an important perspective in the public debate.

There can be no doubt that Peter Lougheed had Alberta’s best interests at heart, and worked his whole life towards that end.  His public service is worthy of our respect and admiration.

He will be missed.
