Do you agree that the Canadian Firearms Registry saves lives? Are you ready to take action?

Members of Parliament are poised to vote on legislation to dismantle the Canadian Firearms Registry on September 22. This vital tool keeps our communities safe and saves lives.

Over the next week, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will join with partners including the Coalition for Gun Control and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) to lobby Members of Parliament to defeat Bill C-391 and save the gun registry.

Did you know?

  • Since 1991, the rate of homicides with rifles and shotguns has decreased by 70 per cent.
  • While firearms were used in approximately 40 per cent of murders of women in 1989, they now account for less than 15 per cent, in part due to stricter controls on firearms.
  • The gun registry does impact officer safety because police use it every day – in 2009 police used the registry 4,042,859 times.
  • The RCMP manages the registry and reported that in 2009 the long-gun portion of the entire firearms registry cost $4.1 million to operate – NOT the billions reported by the Harper government.
  • Gun registrations are free and transfers are done over the phone or online in a matter of minutes.

Join the federal lobbying effort

The CLC has organized a federal lobbying effort and lobbyists from CUPE and the CLC are mobilizing to take action over the next week. Lobbyists will be requesting meetings with Members of Parliament from their own riding and contacting as many CUPE members as possible, asking for their support.

CUPE members are asked to call, write or email their own MP, as well as the 20 MPs listed below. These 20 MPs need to be reminded that you support strong gun control laws in Canada, and you support the gun registry.

Demand that every MP votes to defeat Bill C-391 and save the Canadian Firearms Registry!

Lobbying tools and information:

  • Read the CLC’s letter to MP Malcolm Allen, the same letter was sent to all four MPs applauding their decision to vote in favour of keeping the long-gun registry
  • Download the Worker Health and Safety PDF fact sheet poster from the CLC
  • Read these gun registry myths and facts
  • Read the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program Evaluation – final approved report (February 2010)

CUPE congratulates Members of Parliament Carol Hughes, Claude Gravelle, Charlie Angus, Malcolm Allen and Glenn Thibeault for their recent decision to vote to keep the long-gun registry!
